Cellexcel achieves 100% recyclability in industry tests

Consumers increasingly demand that paper and other cellulose-based packaging materials are fully recyclable. Brands have made clear commitments to deliver on this expectation. Yet specific packaging applications can require the addition of coatings or additional chemicals (such as PFAS or AKD), meaning that recycling through normal channels is impossible or both problematical and expensive.

Cellexcel’s proprietary additive technology overcomes this challenge by modifying cellulose at the molecular level, via a chemical reaction. This enables new properties, such as water resistance, to be built into the material matrix, unlike a traditional coating or film which is added through an expensive secondary process to the surface of a product. Cellexcel’s technology is 100% recyclable.

Recent rigorous packaging tests prove this, showing that products made with Cellexcel treated wet moulded fibre have achieved 100% recyclability. Carried out by a recognised leading test house and following the industry-standard @CEPI Recyclability Test Method, it means packaging materials created with our technology can technically be recycled at any mill with conventional processes. No new equipment, no new processes and no additional costs, all while avoiding toxic chemicals and supporting the circular economy – a better economic solution.

Demonstrating 100% recyclability is a further step forward in our journey, accelerating our adoption across the global packaging industry.
